Executive Board Statement on Racial Justice

OLYMPIA, June 10 – The Retired Public Employees Council Executive Board has released the following statement:

“We are an organization representing more than 10,000 retirees in Washington State, advocating to protect the retirement security and healthcare of those who served the public during their careers. We dedicated our lives in public service to decent treatment for all. We value equality. We value justice. We value life.

“So we are troubled by recent events targeting Black Americans. Their pain is our pain because we stand for fair treatment for all. When Black Americans going about their daily lives like George Floyd, die and those responsible are not held accountable, that is not justice. We demand that the people who took part in these senseless killings be brought to justice. Because without justice, there can be no peace.

“These ongoing tragedies in our communities lay bare the systemic racism in our society that must be addressed. As people who have devoted our lives to public service, we encourage all Americans to stand against these injustices and against racism.

“RPEC stands united with all our partners in the labor and public service communities and demand change — especially for those who have disproportionately suffered due to continuing inequality and injustice. RPEC is committed to supporting efforts to create a more just and equitable society.”
