The Washington State Legislature makes policy decisions that impact retiree pensions, health care benefits, housing affordability, taxation, and more. It’s important that your representatives hear from you to help inform these decisions. You can take part in the lawmaking process by participating in our annual Virtual Legislative Week (click here to learn more). Don’t miss this chance to make your voice heard. The greater the attendance, the louder our voice!

What is Legislative Week, and why is it important?
At the start of each year is Legislative Session, when the Washington State Senate and House meet to create new laws, change existing laws, and enact budgets for the State. The 2026 session is short – from January 12 through March 12. This is prime time to push our legislative priorities, such as reinstating the automatic Plan 1 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA), across the finish line. Legislators need to hear the about the issues, priorities, and personal stories from their constituents to inform them of how they can best serve you.
Legislative Week is an annual event facilitated by RPEC’s Council Office with support from the Washington Education Association – Retired (WEA-R), our partner organization. Over 200 RPEC and WEA-R members attend each year to meet with their elected officials/policy staff. These legislator meetings are coordinated by the Council Office and are just 10-15 minutes long (due to legislators’ busy schedules). No prior experience is necessary. We hope to see new faces each year. The Council Office will ensure you are well prepared for your meetings by providing materials and sample talking points at the event kick-off session Monday morning.
