Social Security Act Anniversary and Pro-Social Security Legislation
Wednesday was the 89th anniversary of the Social Security Act, which was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935. Almost all American workers receive Social Security as part of their retirement income, providing additional support to older Americans with limited resources.
Legislation has been proposed by Senators Sherrod Brown (D) and Susan Collins (R) to repeal the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), which limits Social Security benefits for those whose employers didn’t withhold Social Security taxes.
